Recognized For His Leadership in RNA Biology and the Scientific Foundation Driving Precision Autoimmune Disease Therapeutics, Dr. Garcia-Blanco continues to advance RNA-driven disease mechanisms.
Autoimmunity BioSolutions (ABS), a biotechnology company developing a personalized, genetically guided immuno-corrective therapy designed to normalize elevated levels of soluble IL7 receptor (sIL7R), today announced that company co-founder Dr. Mariano A. Garcia-Blanco has been elected President of the RNA Society, the world's leading organization dedicated to advancing RNA research.
According to the RNA Society, Dr. Garcia-Blanco will serve as President-Elect beginning July 1, 2026, and as President from January 1, 2027, through December 31, 2028.
Dr. Garcia-Blanco is the F. Palmer Weber Medical Research Professor and Chair of Microbiology, Immunology and Cancer Biology at the University of Virginia and an internationally recognized leader in RNA biology and RNA virology. Over more than three decades, his work has helped advance the understanding of RNA-driven disease mechanisms and their therapeutic applications.
At ABS, Dr. Garcia-Blanco's research helped establish the scientific foundation for the company's approach to addressing autoimmune disease by targeting soluble IL7 receptor (sIL7R), a biologic pathway associated with increased disease severity and poor response to treatment across multiple autoimmune conditions.
"Mariano's election as President of the RNA Society reflects the extraordinary impact he has had on RNA science and the respect he has earned across the global research community," said Eugene Williams, MBA, Chief Executive Officer of ABS. "His scientific leadership continues to shape the future of RNA biology while helping guide the translational work underway at ABS to improve outcomes for patients living with autoimmune disease."
"I am honored by the confidence the RNA Society membership has placed in me," said Dr. Garcia-Blanco. "RNA biology is increasingly influencing how we understand disease and develop new therapies. I look forward to serving the Society and supporting the continued advancement of RNA science and its impact on human health."
The RNA Society announced the election results on June 5, 2026, following its annual member vote.
